CHAPTER 15

Ryker’s team situated themselves around the large property, staying out of sight. His gun was a familiar weight in his hand, and he had two more strapped to his waist and ankle.

The property was well hidden within the woods, just as the warehouse had been. The guy clearly had connections to people who knew how to remain hidden.

Erik hadn’t been able to make it today, so it was the four of them. Worked for Ryker. Years of training and working together as a Special Forces team meant that they knew each other inside out. And, more than that, he trusted these men to have his back like he had theirs.

There’d been no movement outside the large house, but a car sat in the drive.

Cole’s voice sounded through the earpiece. “Clear on the east side.”

“Clear on the south,” Declan said.

“Clear on the west,” Jackson added.

Ryker’s blood flowed a bit faster in anticipation of what was to come. “Let’s go.”

He moved out from behind the trees, pistol drawn and aimed forward. The house was two-story, so he kept his gaze between the floors. At the front door, he tried the knob. Locked.

One hard kick breached the door. Wood splintered as glass shattered from both sides of the house. Something crashed in the back. Declan.

Ryker stepped inside, keeping his gun up while scanning the space. He stood in a long hallway with a formal dining room to the left and a living room to the right.

Jackson dropped in through the window on one side of the house while Cole climbed in another. They remained still for two heartbeats. The silence was loud, and it prickled Ryker’s skin.

“Clear,” Jackson said first.

Cole shifted toward the kitchen, weapon still raised. “Clear.”

Declan stepped out of a room at the end of the hall, immediately shaking his head. “Clear.”

Shit.

Cole and Jackson moved slowly around the lower floor while Declan hit the stairs. Ryker followed him up.

His muscles were so tight, they were on the verge of snapping, and his gut churned in sickly spirals.

Something wasn’t right. The house didn’t look like it had been taken over by a terrorist organization—or a family, for that matter. Everything was clean and tidy. There was zero clutter, no photos on the walls. The place almost looked like a show home.

But Cal wouldn’t lie. The man was a friend, and he was damn good at his job.

On the second floor, there was another long hall with doors on either side. One by one, he and Dec entered each room, checking every inch of the space. Beneath beds, inside closets.

Empty. Every damn one. And that eerie silence still clogged the air around him, nearly overwhelming him with dread.

He reached the last room in the house, the master bedroom. He knew what he’d find before he opened the door. Still, he stepped inside. A large king bed on one wall, a small bathroom attached. He moved toward it, every step as quiet as the last, then checked the space the same as he’d done to every other room.
